Who is a chemical engineer?

We define this as a person who:

  • Holds or has held membership of a relevant professional institution, e.g. Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), at a recognised grade, or
  • Holds a degree in chemical engineering recognised by IChemE or other recognised professional organisation, and has relevant work experience as a chemical engineer, biochemical engineer, or process engineer, or as university staff teaching or supporting elements of a chemical engineering curriculum.

Who is a dependent?

  • Partner, spouse, widow of a chemical engineer
  • The guardian or co-parent of a child up to the age of 18 of a chemical engineer
  • Any other family member who is or was dependent on a chemical engineer. We assess this on a case-by-case basis but would typically only support a person under this category with significant health, disability or care needs who is or was living with the chemical engineer.

What evidence is needed?

Whether you or the family member you are dependent on is a chemical engineer, we will ask you to provide evidence that the person is or was actively engaged in chemical engineering. This could be:

  • A certificate of membership or document from the professional institution confirming that the chemical engineer is or was a member
  • A certificate of the chemical engineer’s qualifications, and
  • A copy of a contract, letter from an employer, or reference from a manager or colleague, that confirms the chemical engineer’s job title and length of service.
  • Marriage certificate, shared bills at the same address, birth certificate, or other proof of relationship to a chemical engineer.
